South Florida is one of the sunniest places in the United States — which is part of what makes it so beautiful to live in. It's also why sun damage is one of the most common skin concerns we treat at Kami Aesthetics in Aventura. Years of UV exposure leave their mark: brown spots, uneven skin tone, redness, broken capillaries, and a dullness that no amount of skincare can fully reverse on its own.
IPL photofacial with the Lumenis Stellar M22 is one of the most effective treatments available for reversing that damage — and the results can be dramatic.
What Is IPL Photofacial?
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Unlike a laser, which emits a single wavelength of light, IPL delivers broad-spectrum light across multiple wavelengths simultaneously. Different wavelengths target different chromophores (color-absorbing molecules) in the skin — melanin (responsible for brown spots and pigmentation) and oxyhemoglobin (responsible for redness and vascular lesions).
This makes IPL uniquely versatile: a single treatment session can address sun spots, age spots, rosacea, broken capillaries, and overall skin tone — all at once.
The Stellar M22: Why Technology Matters
Not all IPL devices are equal. At Kami Aesthetics, we use the Lumenis Stellar M22 — the most advanced IPL platform available. The key differentiator is OPT™ (Optimal Pulse Technology).
Traditional IPL devices deliver energy in a spike pattern: a burst of high energy at the start of each pulse that tapers off. This spike is responsible for much of the discomfort and inconsistency associated with older IPL systems — the initial energy spike can be too intense, while the tail end is too weak.
OPT™ delivers a perfectly flat, uniform energy profile throughout each pulse. The result:
- More consistent results — uniform energy means uniform treatment across the entire pulse
- Less discomfort — no energy spike means a gentler sensation
- Safer treatment — controlled energy reduces the risk of overtreatment
The Stellar M22 also features multiple interchangeable filters (515nm–755nm) that allow us to precisely target specific skin concerns, and the ExpertFilter™ system for advanced pigmentation and vascular work.
What Sun Damage Actually Looks Like
Sun damage accumulates over years and manifests in several ways:
- Solar lentigines (sun spots / age spots) — flat brown spots caused by localized melanin overproduction from UV exposure
- Diffuse hyperpigmentation — overall uneven skin tone and dullness
- Telangiectasia (broken capillaries) — small visible blood vessels, often on the nose and cheeks
- Rosacea — chronic redness and flushing, often worsened by sun exposure
- Poikiloderma — a combination of pigmentation, redness, and skin thinning, common on the neck and chest of South Florida residents
IPL with the Stellar M22 can address all of these in the same treatment series.
What to Expect: Before, During, and After
Before treatment: Avoid sun exposure and tanning for two weeks prior. Arrive with clean skin, free of makeup and skincare products. We'll apply a cool gel to the treatment area and provide protective eyewear.
During treatment: The Stellar M22 handpiece is passed over the skin in overlapping pulses. Each pulse feels like a brief warm snap — most clients describe it as mild and very tolerable. A full-face treatment takes 20–30 minutes.
Immediately after: You'll notice mild redness and warmth, similar to a light sunburn. This typically resolves within a few hours. Brown spots will often darken initially — this is normal and expected.
Days 3–10: The darkened spots will begin to flake off, revealing clearer skin underneath. This is the treatment working as intended. Avoid picking or exfoliating during this period.
After 7–14 days: You'll see the full initial results — clearer skin tone, reduced redness, and significantly faded brown spots. Results continue to improve with each session.
How Many Sessions Do You Need?
For most clients treating sun damage in Aventura, we recommend a series of 3–5 sessions spaced 3–4 weeks apart. The number depends on the severity of the damage, your skin type, and your goals.
After completing your initial series, maintenance sessions every 6–12 months help preserve your results — especially important in South Florida where ongoing sun exposure is unavoidable.
IPL vs. Other Sun Damage Treatments
Topical treatments like vitamin C serums and retinoids can help prevent further damage and mildly improve tone over time — but they can't remove existing sun spots or broken capillaries. Chemical peels can improve texture and mild pigmentation but don't target vascular concerns. Laser resurfacing (like ResurFX) addresses texture and collagen but isn't optimized for pigmentation.
IPL is uniquely positioned to address both pigmentation and vascular concerns simultaneously — making it the most efficient single treatment for comprehensive sun damage reversal.
