Why Skin Tone Matters in Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal works by targeting melanin — the pigment that gives hair its color. The laser energy is absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicle, generating heat that disables the follicle's ability to grow new hair.
The challenge: melanin is also present in the skin itself. On darker skin tones, there's more melanin in the surrounding skin, which means a poorly calibrated laser can absorb energy into the skin rather than just the follicle — causing burns, blistering, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).
This is why skin type classification matters. The Fitzpatrick scale rates skin from Type I (very fair, always burns) to Type VI (deeply pigmented, never burns). Older Alexandrite lasers (755nm) work well on Types I–III but become risky on Types IV–VI. Nd:YAG lasers (1064nm) penetrate deeper and are safer for darker skin — but used alone, they're less effective on fine or light hair.

Most laser handpieces emit a circular beam. Circular spots create a geometric problem: when you tile circles together, you either leave gaps (missed follicles) or overlap (double-treating the same skin). Both outcomes are suboptimal.
The Splendor X uses a square spot shape. Squares tile perfectly — no gaps, no overlap. Every pass covers exactly the right area, which means more consistent results and less risk of uneven treatment.
The Cooling System: Comfort for Every Skin Type
Darker skin tones are more sensitive to heat buildup during laser treatment. The Splendor X addresses this with a dual cooling system: Cryo-Touch (contact cooling on the handpiece) and Cryo-Air (a stream of cold air directed at the treatment area). Together, they keep the skin surface cool throughout the session, protecting the epidermis while the laser energy reaches the follicle below.
